The Richard Martin Trail (Rails to Trails)

This 10.2-mile bicycle, horse, and walking trail passes by the site where the historic Battle of Sulpher Creek Trestle took place during the Civil War. Peaceful today, the trail leads visitors through beautiful woodlands and wetlands. Trailheads are located on Piney Chapel Road just north of Athens, and in Veto, Alabama, at the Tennessee state line. An 1800s community church has been restored and can be seen at the Veto trailhead. Brochures can be picked up at the Athens Visitor Center.
