The city of Decatur was initially known as Rhodes Ferry Landing, named for Dr. Henry W. Rhodes, an early landowner who operated a ferry that crossed the Tennessee River in the 1810s at the present-day location of Rhodes Ferry Park. The town witnessed 2,300 Cherokee pass through in 1837 and 1838 during what came to be known as the Trail of Tears. Now an almost 8-acre city park, Rhodes Ferry offers picnicking, a playground & walking trail plus impressive river views.
