The Florence Indian Mound Museum is hosting a series of children’s programs for students to explore early Shoals history through short lessons & hands-on learning. The programs explore 12 Native American figures through their biographies, contributions, hope & accomplishments. Students receive a passport with the 12 figures & a stamp for each program attended. Students who collect six, nine or 12 stamps receive an award.
At 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, the session will be about Chickasaw storyteller Te Ata, who was born Mary Thompson Fisher in Oklahoma in 1895. She later took the stage name “Te Ata,” which means “Bearer of the Morning.” Te Ata became an actor & storyteller, preserving Chickasaw stories through words, artistic interpretations & children’s books. This free program and activity explores her life & contributions and the importance of storytelling.
