Grant Submission Form

National Heritage Areas are a program within the National Park Service. The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, which operates under the University of North Alabama, was designated by Congress in 2009 to preserve history & culture in the northwest Alabama counties connected to the Muscle Shoals stretch of the Tennessee River: Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone & Morgan. We work on projects connected to the preservation and interpretation of natural, cultural and historical resources in our six counties. The three themes the MSNHA focuses on are the Tennessee River, Music, and Native American Heritage.

Grants are reimbursable in amounts of $1,000 to $7,500. Grants require a 1:1 match.

Grant applications must be received 90 days before the event/program/project start date.

*Note: Organization and the project must be located within the MSNHA (Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Limestone, Lawrence, and Morgan)

*Note: Individuals are not eligible to apply for grants.

*Note: Please note that expenses paid for before or after these dates cannot count as match or be reimbursed. MSNHA grant projects have a maximum project period of one year.

*Note: Upload completed budget spreadsheet (pdf only). Download form here.
Please reference the sample sheet .
**Note: Applicants must provide at least a dollar-for-dollar match; we encourage overmatch (anything over the dollar-for-dollar match). Match & overmatch must be from non-federal sources: foundation or private-sector grants, the applicant organization, project partners, in-kind non-cash contributions from professionals and/or volunteers ($25.25/hour, $12.50/hour students participating as part of an enrolled-course assignment, verified hourly rate for professionals) or any combination thereof. In-kind contributions may be labor, services, materials, equipment, supplies, and/or travel expenses necessary for project objectives. Purchases of real property, overhead & general administrative costs don't count toward matches. Matching & overmatching contributions must begin after grant's award date.
