The city of Russelville was settled around the intersection of Jackson’s Military Road and Gaines Trace and was incorporated in 1819. The historic downtown features beautiful homes and buildings from the 1800s, including the historic Roxy Theatre. A wonderful piece of art is on display in the Russellville Post Office and is a must-see for all visitors. The mural, “Shipment of First Iron Produced,” is a 1938 WPA mural painted by Conrad A. Albrizzio and is one of only 24 WPA murals created in Alabama during the Great Depression. For history buffs and people searching for genealogical information, the Franklin County Archives is an excellent resource and is fully staffed.
