Built in 1835, the former home of Alabama governor and U.S. senator George S. Houston is a public library and museum. Exhibits include furnishings and family artifacts. The library also is a museum of sorts — you find your books using a Dewey Decimal System card catalog and then your selections’ due dates are hand-stamped.
