Whether you live in northwest Alabama & want spring-break ideas close to home or you live farther away & are making the MSNHA your spring-break destination, there’s plenty to choose from here. Think stunning outdoor opportunities, intriguing historic sites and world-famous Grammy winners. In fact, there are so many exciting options that we’ve selected a few of our favorites to get you started. You’re gonna want to take notes.
- Need a breath of fresh air? Get out & enjoy one of the area’s best seasons of the year–mosquitos aren’t in full attack mode yet, it’s not 100 degrees in the shade & the flowers are gorgeous. Check out camping, boating, hiking fishing and other outdoor opportunities at such locations as Wilson Lake, Wheeler Lake, the William B. Bankhead National Forest & Pickwick Lake.
- Is an easy amble more your speed? Take a walk at Wildwood Park or Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Soak up the sun at Riverfront Park or cool off with the splash pad at Delano Park. But wait, there’s more! Be sure to visit our website’s Sites & Attractions page for other ideas.
- Can’t get enough history? Explore such local historical treasures as Nitrate Village One, Belle Mont Mansion, the town of Mooresville and historic districts in almost every MSNHA city–some with scheduled walking tours or brochures for a self-guided loop. You’ll find more details here.
- Want to learn more about the first people who lived in the Tennessee River basin? Explore the heritage of our American Indian ancestors and their 1830s forced removal from the area at The Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall, Florence Indian Mound and Museum and Oakville Indian Mounds and Museum. And come back in September for the annual Oka Kapassa, Return to Coldwater festival.
- And, of course, there’s our music. Your first stop is our Roots of American Music Trail website. There you can plan your itinerary using our RAMT cellphone tour, watch exclusive oral-history interviews with world-renowned music makers and learn about other northwest Alabama music sites to visit. Also check here for other arts suggestions.
Whew! Tired yet? We haven’t even mentioned Point Mallard Park — the nation’s first water park. Or Veterans Memorial Park , where you can see an F 4 Phantom aircraft. What about the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in Alabama? Or the Jesse Owens Museum, where you can tour a replica of the Olympian’s birthplace. Or the …
You’ll just have to come back soon.
