Forks of Cypress Plantation Site

Built in 1819, Forks of Cypress was the first home in America with a peristyle colonnade (columns on all four sides) and is regarded as one of the great houses in Alabama. Only the columns of the historic house remain after a devastating fire in 1966. Among the enslaved laborers who once lived here were the ancestors of author Alex Haley, who wrote the 1976 novel “Roots.”

In Florence from Cox Creek Parkway, turn north onto Jackson Road then right at the dead end. Please remember that Forks of Cypress is private property.
