Nitrate Village One

The U.S. government built these stucco and red-tiled-roofed bungalows to house workers for a World War I nitrate plant. Later named for TVA dams, streets in Village One were laid out in the shape of the Liberty Bell. A school, officer’s barracks, stables, and many other outbuildings completed the Village. Today only the homes, the school and the barracks remain. The non-profit Village School Foundation is dedicated to restoring the school building
