Nitrate Village One

Interior of the Village School Auditorium, Hidden Spaces Project

The U.S. government built these stucco and red-tiled-roofed bungalows to house workers for a World War I nitrate plant. Later named for TVA dams, streets in Village One were laid out in the shape of the Liberty Bell. A school, officer’s barracks, stables, and many other outbuildings completed the Village. Today, only the homes, the school, and the barracks remain.
